WWF-SA has played a leading role on climate change issues within South Africa and the WWF network. The WWF network has an expert global team, co-ordinated by the climate and energy global practice (CEP), that is actively involved in shaping the global climate change negotiations. The CEP also represents WWF in many other fora in which WWF’s voice and stances are articulated or used to influence international outcomes, practices and mobilisation of collective action amongst key stakeholders, constituencies and ordinary citizens across the globe.

WWF-SA is also host to components of the Science Based-Target (SBT) programme, which works with firms and business that have significant carbon footprints to reduce their scope 1 and 2 emissions along trajectories that meet agreed global SBT targets for climate change and GHG emissions.

Given the pronounced effects climate change will have on the African continent all WWF’ South Africa’s environmental goals are in some way impacted by climate change. For this reason the climate change programme plays a critical integration role across programmes of work including, marine, food, sustainable agriculture, wildlife, land and biodiversity stewardship and freshwater.

WWF South Africa while part of the global network defines it’s priorities through the lens of the development agenda of our country. The climate change programme aims to ensure that all work towards the necessary transition is just, cognisant of the immediate needs of poverty alleviation and inequality.

The senior programme manager for climate change will report to the current head of the Policy and Futures Unit but will be expected to work across several of WWF’s conservation, business development and communications units. The core elements of the KPIs will be on the ability to work across conservation programmes, to account for a coherent programme and fund-raising for WWF’s climate change work. The envisaged role for the above position is to ensure that this leadership role continues that has a strong South Africa focus with the potential to play a support role for other African WWF offices and programmes within Southern Africa and Africa with time. The envisaged role will have five key tracts that will have to be given oversight and for which a strong programme footing will have to be developed. They are:

1.Overseeing the existing climate mitigation work and further developing the depth and reach with the existing team to ensure continued policy impact;
2.Developing an integrated programme for adaptation that builds on current work across WWF’s conservation programmes with the view to developing a robust integrated strategy for implementation and impact and funding base for adaptation;
3.Ensure that a strong climate futures and resilience model is developed that can be rolled out in key conservation programmes of WWF-SA such as land and biodiversity stewardship, sustainable agriculture, freshwater, marine and wildlife initiatives with the view of replicating such models in select WWF regional programmes, as appropriate;
4.Helping to sharpen WWF-SA’s responsiveness to climate vulnerability in so far as it concerns systemic effects on South Africa’s economy, livelihoods and future jobs under the umbrella of a just-transition;
5.Oversee the Science-Based Targets (SBT) team and facilitate the expansion of the scope of work of the SBT with strategic business partners and also developing new models for catalysing sectoral based transformation with the use of SBT tools.


•Be a recognised leader in the climate space: The ideal candidate will have a track record of hands-on experience in developing adaptation programmes and experience with using climate futures and resilience lens as part of climate programme development and execution;
•Be a capable and collaborative leader: To be able to meaningfully fulfil the primary emphasis of the position the candidate must be able to demonstrate a strong grounding in programme leadership and development;
•A strong understanding of multidisciplinary issues: The position requires strong integrative and facilitative skills with the ability to deal with multidisciplinary issues and expertise across WWF’s conservation programmes. This includes experience or knowledge of climate change issues related to place-based programmes in South Africa or the Africa region;
•Has the capacity or intellectual flexibility to engage complex economic and development issues associated with climate change impacts whether from a mitigation or adaptation point of view;
•Must have a track-record in fund-raising and wide network of people in the climate change community of practice
•The role will not have primacy in implementation as the core focus is on ensuring that WWF-SA has an integrated approach and strategy for climate change (which is adequately or well-funded) which will be delivered via its existing or new conservation programmes that are being developed;
•Be able to function, operate, and achieve recognition in a fast-moving field in which WWF-SA’s work and views are adequately represented within the WWF network and CEP;
•Have the ability to represent and defend WWF’s position in the climate change policy and advocacy arena in formal government processes and with WWF partners;
•Have a strong strategic mind that assists WWF to identify its core niche and position in the climate change policy and implementation arena;
•Ability to work across the diversity of WWF-SA’s teams and develop a robust climate change strategy incorporating the key elements identified above to ensure that WWF’s approach is integrated, has a high impact and adequately represents its presence in both the mitigation and adaptation fields;
•Have proficiency in identifying new funding opportunities and being able to prioritise and secure large-scale funding especially for WWF-SA’s general climate work with the prioritisation of adaptation funding needs as the main focus for the short-term.

•At least a Masters level qualification and 5-8 years’ experience in climate change issues. An exception may be considered only when accompanied with an exceptional track record of achievement. Experience in the following is essential:
Climate mitigation and adaptation (adaptation expertise will be an added advantage)
Insights into new innovations in this space
Demonstration of strong policy knowledge
Demonstration of the ability to raise large-scale funding
•Strong leadership and management skills
•Demonstrated analytical and research skills
•Strong writing and presentation skills
•Ability to demonstrate the incumbent can access and draw on relevant networks
•Ability to inspire people (in government, business and civil society) to act on the challenges that we face together
•A demonstrated ability to work independently and without daily supervision and guidance
•Capacity to act as a spokesperson on WWF South Africa’s initiatives and ability to convey complex environmental issues in a powerful way to diverse audiences
•A strong command of English as a working language is essential: written and spoken capability in at least one other official South African language is essential
